SS Credit 7.1: Heat Island Effect—Nonroof

The intent of LEED® SS Credit 7.1 is to minimize the contribution that site hardscapes can have towards the creation of "heat islands," especially in urban areas. The use of tile can help satisfy the requirements of this credit through option 1, where 1 point can be obtained if 50% of a building site's exterior hardscaping (including roads, sidewalks, courtyards and parking lots) utilizes one or a combination of several strategic heat-reducing options. One of these options includes the use of hardscaping materials with a Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) greater than or equal to 29. Most light-colored tile products exceed this value, and they are a great alternative to traditional paving materials with generally lower SRI values.
